the modern marketing era began in the 1960's and is still being used today. The main focus of companies is the customer, in other words "the customer knows best". Companies are focused on filling the needs of customers, they make what the market wants to buy not what company wants to sell.

Companies well often tell their employees to make it seem like they are going out of their way to treat customers better, so customers who think their getting special treatment will want to buy more.
